Green is Beautiful

How Do I Love Thee, Green? Let Me Count The Ways.

At BANFF, we're as committed to the environment as we are to television. We listened to what delegates had to say about last year's Festival and this June, BANFF is undergoing a complete eco-overhaul through initiatives designed to reduce our impact on the planet.

We believe in sourcing and supporting sustainable projects which reduce waste and energy consumption. For us it's not just lip service and we're striving to put our money where our mouths are. From the purchasing of carbon credits to off-set transportation, to providing more recycling stations throughout the conference centre, to finding ways to eliminate paper waste, these are some of the unique ways in which we're "greening up" at BANFF and making a conscious effort to reduce our Carbon Footprint.

New Jute Delegate Bags!

As a fresh departure from the traditional synthetic fibre nylon bags that most conferences use, this year we're shaking it up with a more environmentally sustainable delegate bag.

BANFF is launching a brand new era in developing a greener conference bag. We're moving away from the traditional synthetic vinyl conference bags, and embracing a more eco-friendly, 100% biodegradable, fair trade delegate bag made from jute; a pesticide-free rain-fed crop and vegetable fibre. Knowing that these gems are made in India by an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) company with very strict regulations and that the airplane shipping of these bags is carbon-offset through donations to pollution reduction projects, you can carry your guilt-free jute conference bag with pride . We're doing the tree-hugging for you so that you can spend more time networking and establishing the relationships that you need to business.

Online Publications
As part of our continuous efforts in being environmentally friendly, BANFF is introducing online publications. By making our program guide available online we are also eliminating paper waste, which keeps Banff beautiful.

Fly Carbon-neutral to Banff
If you've ever done the dishes, you understand the idea of offsetting. Just as you can't keep piling your dishes in the sink, we can't keep dumping our CO2 into the atmosphere. Like everything else in life, we have to clean it up eventually. That's what offsetting does.

When you buy offsets, you help fund projects that soak up the atmosphere's CO2 by planting trees, and other projects that install cleaner technology. By first calculating how much CO2 you emit, and offsetting the same amount, you can become carbon-neutral.

Zerofootprint is a non-profit organization that provides information, products, and services for the global network of consumers and businesses who wish to reduce their environmental impact.

If you'd like to make your travel to and from Banff carbon-neutral, please visit the Zerofootprint carbon calculator at www.zerofootprintoffsets.com, where you can add up your emissions, then visit the Carbon Shop to purchase offsets. It's not expensive, and it makes a real difference.

Share Transportation and Make Your Contribution
with Banff Airporter

Shuttle transportation to and from the Calgary International Airport is discounted for delegates in 2008, compliments of Banff Airporter. Banff Airporter shuttles are fueled by natural gas, minimizing the environmental impact of harmful CO2 emissions. For more information please visit: www.banffairporter.com.

Once you arrive in Banff and are wondering how to travel between your hotel and the Fairmont Banff Springs every day, consider taking public transportation provided by the Town of Banff.

Also, show your delegate badge and hop on our COMPLIMENTARY Banff World Television Festival Town Shuttle travelling once a day from/to affiliated accommodation providers. To download a map of the Town of Banff that outlines the route and schedule, please click here

Town of Banff Bus Service Town of Banff buses depart Hidden Ridge Resort every 30 minutes, starting at 6:38 am, and arrive downtown 15 minutes later. Buses also depart the Inns of Banff every 30 minutes starting at 6:55 am, arriving at the Fairmont Banff Springs 15 minutes later. The full schedule, pricing, and map are located at on the town of Banff website. The Town of Banff is in the process of hiring hybrid buses to provide this transportation.

New Mailbox System
This year BANFF is committed to "greening" the Festival. One of the many improvements in working towards this was getting rid of the old mailboxes in order to reduce the tremendous paper waste they generated. By removing the mailboxes from the Canwest Delegate Lounge, we’re addressing the request by so many of our delegates to increase the space available for meetings; there will be more room for additional tables and chairs in the Canwest Delegate Lounge this year. However, if anyone wants to drop something off for someone specifically, there will be the STARZ Information and Messaging Centre prominently located in the middle of the Canwest Delegate Lounge, where delegates will be able to check for messages and meet up with other delegates.

Recycling Stations
Banff is providing a number of recycling stations throughout the conference centre to enhance recycling opportunities for delegates in 2008. Look for the recognizable signage and deposit your recyclable products! Signage examples coming soon!

Fairmont Banff Springs offers Eco-meet
The Fairmont Banff Springs is working strongly toward a goal of offering ecologically friendly meetings. Some unique parts of the Fairmont Eco-meet program include free overnight parking for all guests arriving in hybrid vehicles, and paper-free services for most meetings.
