+ - 14:30-15:30 American Film Institute Digital Content Lab Info Session
Sunday June 8th 14:30 - 15:30 Session Baron Shaughnessy In Partnership with: Banff World Television Festival
Can you shoot a TV show inside a video game? Or reinvent the documentary format for young viewers? If dissecting a visionary lab’s production process piques your interest the American Film Institute Digital Content Lab information session is for you. AFI Digital Content Lab green lit two R&D projects to explore both questions, and this session gives an inside look at the lab's production process. One team created a pilot presentation for an original, animated series. Akin to the cut scenes used as transitions in video games, this "TV" series renders its visuals dynamically on an Xbox or PC, without the use of video or film. The second R&D team worked on a website for a documentary about video gamers. The film's executive producers and their AFI teammates let go of the assumption that their audience would watch a 90-minute, nonfiction film in one session. They embraced nonlinear film viewing and factored in the impact of social networks. Both projects highlight the convergence of film, TV and new media production and the type of collaborations that are central to the mission of AFI Digital Content Lab. Speaker

Professor Richard Florida’s ideas on the “creative class,” commercial innovation, and regional development have been featured in major ad campaigns from BMW and Apple, and are being used globally to change the way regions and nations do business and transform their economies. His holistic approach to problem-solving and strategy development is relevant to anyone looking to harness that creativity, everyone from international diplomats to documentary filmmakers, and Fortune 100 businesses to community organizers. In the last 5 years, Florida has penned 2 national bestsellers, “The Rise of the Creative Class” and “The Flight of the Creative Class”. His new book, “Who's Your City?: How the Creative Economy Is Making Where to Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life” takes a look at the way people choose the places they live and how that affects everything from their real estate to their families. His previous books, especially “The Breakthrough Illusion and Beyond Mass Production”, paved the way for his provocative looks at how creativity is revolutionizing the global economy. Florida has authored pieces for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Economist, The Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic Monthly, The Chronicle for Higher Education, U.S. News and World Report and more.

+ - 13:00-14:00 Panel: A Critical Evaluation of Why Democracy?
Monday June 9th 13:00 - 14:00 Session Van Horne A In Partnership with: Rogers Communications Inc.
“Why Democracy?” was the largest factual broadcast event ever attempted. 10 documentaries from award-winning film makers were presented to the world by 48 different broadcasters in more than 180 countries. As well 18 short films and an elaborate on-line and outreach process were important features. Bill Nemtin conducts a critical evaluation of the “Why Democracy?” project with the project originators and architects Nick Fraser from the BBC and Metta Hoffman-Meyer of DR, Danish Public Broadcasting. Clips from the programs including Academy Award winning “Taxi to the Dark Side”, and Rockie nominees “Iron Ladies of Liberia” and”Please Vote For Me” will also be featured. Can such a project that is so spread out and so diverse achieve the coherence and consistency required of a Television series? Is this a new prototype for ambitious factual projects or a recipe for cash flow hell? Is television still a sympathetic place for programs on important social issues?
